St Thomas More Society

The St. Thomas More Society

Diocese of Youngstown

alt

Formed by Catholic lawyers and judges in conjunction with the Diocese of Youngstown to come together to grow in our faith and further educate ourselves about our faith and St. Thomas More, the patron saint of lawyers.

The Society meets quarterly on the fourth Friday of January, April, July and October.  Members attend the 12:10 mass at St. Columba Cathedral, followed by a light lunch and a class on topics such as the life and philosophy of St. Thomas More.  The anticipated time commitment is about 1 ½ hours.

The purpose of the Society is to assist in the spiritual growth of its members; to provide an opportunity as Catholic lawyers and judges to come together to share their faith; to encourage members to remain faithful to the Church and her teachings, and more importantly, to live their lives consistent with the teachings of the Catholic faith; to strive to incorporate the ideals and commitment to faith exemplified by St. Thomas More in the practice of the law and in their personal lives.

Some Society members may choose to serve on a committee that hosts the annual Red Mass for the Diocese of Youngstown.  Instituted by Bishop Thomas Tobin in 1997, the centuries old tradition of the Red Mass is offered to seek God’s blessing and guidance upon lawyers and judges in the administration of justice.
