The Fortnight for Freedom is fourteen days of prayer, education and action for religious freedom in the United States and abroad, called for by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. The Fortnight for Freedom takes place from June 21 to July 4 with the theme Freedom for Mission. In the Church’s liturgical calendar, this two-week period coincides with celebrations of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of religious persecution by political power, including St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church in Rome. More information on the Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom for Mission may be found at www.fortnight4freedom.org.

In observance of the Fortnight for Freedom, the Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of Youngstown will preside at a Holy Hour and deliver the homily on Independence Day, Tuesday, July 4, from 6:45 to 7:45 pm at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 West Wood Street, Youngstown. All are welcome to celebrate and reflect upon our religious freedom – “our most cherished liberty.”

After the Holy Hour, at 8:00 p.m., St. Columba Cathedral will host a Fireworks Extravaganza on the front porch of the Cathedral, including a free cook-out. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling 330-744-8451 ext. 271. Bring soft drinks and chairs to watch the Youngstown fireworks scheduled to take place at 10:00 p.m. Donations will be accepted.
