The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown Office of Religious Education has hired Joan Lawson as a Consultant for Religious Education effective January 22, 2018.  A Consultant for Religious Education works with the Diocesan Director and another Consultant in serving the diocesan parishes and schools, especially pastors, parish ministers, and school principals in catechetical and other pastoral areas.  The Office of Religious Education strives primarily to enable adults to fulfill their responsibility and privilege to share the faith with other adults, youth, and children.

Joan Lawson brings to the position extensive pastoral experience and educational preparation.  Holding an M.A. from Loyola University of New Orleans in Religious Education and a M.A. in History from Northeastern University of Boston, she has committed herself to lifelong learning and is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics.  Joan has served as a Director of Religious Education at St. Paul Parish, Salem, St. Brendan Parish, Youngstown, St. Michael Parish, Canfield, and most recently at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Austintown.

Prior to her employment in diocesan parishes, Joan worked with educational programming for adults and youth with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society (Youngstown) and the Danvers Historical Society (Danvers, Massachusetts).

Joan Lawson has been active in multiple diocesan and community groups including the Diocesan Christian Initiation Committee, Diocesan Board of Religious Education, Diocesan Liturgical Commission, and the Diocesan Youth Convention Planning Committee.  Joan and her husband, Bill Lawson reside in Youngstown.
