Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J. has appointed Stephen J. Carattini as the Director for Social Concerns for the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, effective March 1, 2018. Mr. Carattini’s appointment follows a national search facilitated by Catholic Recruiter Associates of Ridgefield, Connecticut, and the recommendation of a local search committee comprised of community and religious leaders from across the Diocese of Youngstown.

Mr. Carattini enjoyed a successful 18-year professional career as an executive in the international transportation and logistics industry before discerning a vocation within the faith-based charitable sector in 2003.

Most recently Mr. Carattini held the position of Chief Executive Officer with Catholic Social Services in the Archdiocese of Edmonton, Canada. Prior to that he served as the Chief Operating Officer for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver, and the Director of Immigration and Refugee Services with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Born in New York City, Stephen grew up in Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, and Iran. He and his wife Michelle were married in 1985 and they have two children. In the summer of 2012, he walked the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage across northern Spain. Mr. Carattini holds a Master’s Degree in Theology from St. Thomas University in Houston, and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C.

In his new role as Director for Social Concerns, Mr. Carattini will oversee the Offices of Catholic Charities, Social Action, and Hispanic Ministry, as well as the Annual Bishop’s Appeal for Catholic Charities and Church. He will also serve on the Diocesan Administrative Board, a body of leaders in the chancery offices who serve as advisors and consultors to the Bishop.

“Mr. Carattini is a proven leader with numerous accomplishments throughout his impressive professional career,” states Very Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Siffrin, Vicar General and Moderator of Curia for the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown.

“His expertise in strategic leadership and organizational management, along with his understanding of Catholic identity and his passion for Church ministry, will benefit the Diocese of Youngstown, and advance the mission of the Department of Social Concerns: to promote the themes of Catholic social teaching through service, advocacy and convening; to welcome and engage Hispanic Catholics into enthusiastic participation in the life of the Church; and to challenge parishes and individuals to live the Gospel message of love by putting faith into action.”
