Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of Youngstown, wrote a letter to all parishioners in the Diocese of Youngstown to be read from the pulpit in all parishes. The letter is in response to the recent announcement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stating that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and contraception. This mandate negatively impacts the Church directly by striking at the fundamental right to religious liberty for citizens of all faiths.
In that letter, he asks: “First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting various official Catholic websites such as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops www.usccb.org/conscience, the Catholic Conference of Ohio http://www.ohiocathconf.org, and our own Diocesan of Youngstown website http://www.cathdoy.org to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administration’s decision. I ask you to consider writing now to your Congressional Representative and Senator urging them to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179, S. 1467).”
