YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Diocese of Youngstown is pleased to acknowledge two recent awards for programs produced by the Catholic Telecommunications Network of Youngstown (CTNY): a Communicator Award of Excellence for its radio program Wineskins and a Telly Award for its television program Mass for Shut-Ins. With this year’s awards, CTNY has now won a total of 22 Communicator Awards, with five for Wineskins, and a total of 18 Telly Awards in a history that spans over forty years. Wineskins has also previously won two Proclaim Awards and two Gabriel Awards.

Father James Korda will retire as an active priest of the Diocese of Youngstown and President of CTNY on July 1, 2022. His ministry has included almost 30 years as a CTNY producer and host, with 20 of those as President or Director of CTNY. The Most Rev. David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown, comments that, “These two new awards are a fitting capstone to Father James Korda’s award-winning career in radio and television ministry. I am grateful to Father Korda for his pioneering work in proclaiming the Gospel and telling the story of our Catholic and interfaith community. He leaves a legacy of communicating the compassionate love of God with innovation and joy.”

The CTNY production team also includes Robert Gavalier and Brother Dominic Calabro, SSP. With Korda, they have both participated in the award-winning efforts of CTNY for over twenty-five years (Calabro, Korda, and Gavalier, left to right, are pictured holding this year’s Communicator Award).

This year’s 28th Annual Communicator Awards were announced by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts. CTNY was awarded an Award of Excellence in the Audio category for the May 2, 2021 episode of Wineskins. The episode featured Father James Korda as host and his interview with Youngstown Bishop David Bonnar on Bishop Bonnar’s pastoral letter, Testify to the Light, along with an interview with Diana Hancharenko on young adult ministry, a feature on the saints by Brother Dominic Calabro, SSP, and scripture commentary by Father Matthew Humerickhouse.

Also this year, the 43rd Annual Telly Awards were announced as judged by the Telly Award Judging Council. They included a Bronze Award for the CTNY program, Mass for Shut-Ins, which was recognized for its August 15, 2021 episode for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father James Korda was the presider for the Mass, with Barbara Zorn as the cantor (singer) and lector (reader). (Korda and Zorn are pictured holding this year’s Telly Award.)
