All high school aged teens in the six-county Catholic Diocese of Youngstown are invited to the biennial Diocesan Youth Convention (DYC’12) on Sunday, November 4, at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Canton from 10:15 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. Approximately 400 teenagers and chaperones from throughout the diocese will participate in this event sponsored by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and supported in part by the Bishop’s Appeal. This one-day event celebrates the giftedness of young people, and assists them in learning, sharing and practicing their faith.
The DYC’12 features inter-active opportunities for teens to get involved with hands-on learning, as well as service opportunities, which will include sewing pillowcase dresses for Haitian children, writing letters of prayerful support to military personnel, and preparing food for the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality. Teens will also have time to meet area college campus ministers, members of religious communities, and volunteers of service agencies. All participants are also asked to bring a new pair of shoes to donate to the “Soles 4 Souls” project.
The Convention activities will include educational workshops, Sunday Mass with Bishop George V. Murry, S.J, and keynote addresses by Mike Patin, speaker, educator and itinerant minister from Louisiana. Mr. Patin has worked in youth ministry since 1984, spending six years as a high school teacher and coach before working for the CYO/Youth Ministry Office for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He was also on the adjunct faculty at the Notre Dame School of Theology Seminary in New Orleans for two years. Since 2003, Mr. Patin has been speaking full time to young people and adults on issues of Catholic faith. He has served as a workshop presenter, emcee and keynoter for parish, diocesan, regional and national conferences, including the NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference), the NCCYM (National Conference for Catholic Youth Ministry), and NACYML Forum (National Association of Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders).
Mr. Patin has presented in more than 115 dioceses. He focuses his presentations around the values of affirmation, challenge and encouragement. His words come through the context of “re-examining real life through the eyes of faith in Jesus.”
Mr. Patin is a husband, father, and faith-filled Catholic. He is energetic, funny, practical, and a gifted storyteller. His book is titled “A Standing Invitation.” More information about Mr. Patin may be found at: www.MikePatin.com/
All teens must attend as part of a parish or school group, and should contact their youth minister or campus minister to register. Materials are available on the diocesan website at:
Registration deadline is October 12. Due to the generosity of donors, the cost is only $30 per person (the same price since 2004). Fee includes an event t-shirt, meals, materials and all sessions.
