The January 16, 2013, Diocese of Youngstown School Leadership Meeting attended by the presidents, principals, and other school leaders was dedicated to improving the Emergency Management Plans and school safety of its 35 schools.
Mahoning County Sheriff’s Deputies Robert Russo, Jeff Saluga, Sgt. Steve Lindlow, Greg Taillon and Ret. Sgt. Chuck Van Dyke facilitated the workshop. The deputies lectured on basic strategies, ways to secure classrooms, the A.L.I.C.E (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) system of school safety, evacuation, and lockdown techniques that will be beneficial in an emergency.
Dr. Lois Cavucci, President of the Lumen Christi Catholic Schools representing seven Diocese of Youngstown Schools, said, “the deputies were very informative and supportive of our needs and the concerns we have heard from our parents.”
All Diocese of Youngstown Schools will be conducting audits of their emergency management plans and overall school safety in an effort to increase school safety.
