Serving a vibrant comprehensive urban research university, the Catholic Newman Center at Youngstown State University is the official Catholic presence at YSU. The Center is seeking a person who is committed to providing pastoral care to students, staff and faculty and bringing them into a deeper relationship with Christ and his church. The campus minister will work to foster an environment of hospitality, discipleship, prayer, love of the Church and her teachings, love of the Sacraments, and a heart for social justice and community outreach activities.
The primary purpose of campus ministry is to accompany young adults and support them in their preparation to become life-long Catholics and leaders in their eventual home parishes. The campus minister facilitates ongoing spiritual formation including, but not limited to developing and implementing programming, retreats, service projects and immersion experiences. In partnership with the priest chaplain, the campus minister organizes weekly liturgies at the Center and other liturgies on the campus for Holy Days and other occasions. As the liaison between the Church and campus, the campus minister participates in the YSU Campus Ministers Organization and serves as a resource to the Catholic Student Association, empowering student leadership on campus and attracting new students to the Center. The campus minister engages the faculty, staff and alumni of the university and the larger community, including Diocesan parishes and high schools and local nonprofits. The campus minister works with the Center advisory board to set and achieve goals for YSU Newman, which may include fundraising and representing Newman to stakeholders, university groups and community agencies. Additionally, the campus minister will work closely with the diocesan director of campus ministry and support staff from Ursuline Ministries, and may be asked to assume some administrative tasks related to support of Center operations. The job will require weekend work and some evenings.
