SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

The Catholic Exponent, bi-weekly newspaper of the Diocese of Youngstown, is seeking an editor to coordinate the special sections of the newspaper and perform other editorial functions. In consultation with the Editor, the Special Sections Editor will generate appealing story (and photo) ideas for the 35+ special sections the newspaper runs each year; call potential interviewees and assign articles; do preliminary editing of articles; and write headlines and cutlines.

He or she will also compose news briefs from press releases, and proofread the print edition of the newspaper as well as the annual diocesan directory. The Special Sections Editor will support the editorial team as the publication develops future digital and design innovations.

The Special Sections Editor will work in the office three 7½-hour days (a total of 22½ hours, benefits eligible) each week on these specific days: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the first week of the newspaper’s two-week production schedule; and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the second week.

Viable candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field; an ability to work on deadline; excellent writing/copyediting skills and experience; strong organizational and planning skills; self-motivation, creativity and vision; proficiency in Microsoft Word; commitment to work with and inspire freelance writers; and appreciation for and thorough knowledge of the Catholic Church, its teaching, the institutions of the Diocese of Youngstown and issues affecting local Catholics.
