On April 24, 2021, Pope Francis approved a new synodal programme for the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops entitled, “For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission.” The path toward the celebration of the Synod comprises of three phases between October 2021 and October 2023, a diocesan phase, a continental phase and finally a conclusive phase at the level of the Universal Church.
To emphasis that this synodal path is a shared journey, the Holy Father will celebrate the opening of the Synod at Vatican City on October 9-10, 2021. The following Sunday, October 17, 2021 he has asked that each diocese celebrate the opening of the Synod. Therefore, Bishop David Bonnar of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, cordially invite you to St. Columba Cathedral on October 17, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. for the synod opening mass here in Youngstown.
Bishop Bonnar states, “I would like to emphasis the importance of diocesan consultation in regards to the synod. The object of the diocesan phase is to consult the People of God so that the synodal process is carried out through listening sessions of the baptized.” Bishop Bonnar has appointed Monsignor John Zuraw contact person for synodal consultation. He will be the point of reference and link between the Episcopal Conference and diocese. With God’s grace, we will find creative ways to articulate diocesan dynamics, agendas and priorities in preparation for the Synod.
