In 1913 the Slovak pioneers of the south east side of Youngstown (Lansingville) petitioned the Bishop of Cleveland for the right to establish a parish. In June of 1914 Saint Matthias was established and the Reverend John M Gerenda was appointed the pastor. Construction of the frame Church was began in September of 1914 on the corner of Homewood and Harmon Avenue. On July 4, 1915 the Church was completed.
The Reverend Francis Kozelek became the second pastor of Saint Matthias Church in February 1922.
Construction of a brick Romanesque Church began in June of 1925 on the corner of East Indianola and Homewood Avenue completion and dedication took place in June of 1926.
Revered Francis Kozelek resigned due to illness in May of 1938 and native son of Saint Matthias Church, John G. Hamrak was appointed the third pastor of the parish.
Seven and a half acres of land was purchased in August of 1948 located on Shady Run Road, Cornell Street, and Zedaker Avenue. Saint Matthias School was the first building on the property in September of 1952, the convent was added in November of 1957, the rectory was added in July of 1968 and today’s church was the fourth building added to the property in April of 1973. The church is a contemporary style brick building, with seating for 582 people in a semi-circle arrangement; the stained glass rose window from the original Church (on Homewood Avenue) is sent in the rear wall to form the back drop of the tabernacle, and the original pipe organ was also installed.
The Reverend George F. Winca was appointed the fourth pastor of Saint Matthias in March of 1965 and the Reverend Francis Snock was appointed the fifth pastor of Saint Mathias in 1974. The Reverend Monsignor Peter M. Polando, D. Min., J.C.L., was appointed the sixth pastor of Saint Matthias in August of 1994, Reverend Martin Celuch, J.C.L. was appointed the seventh pastor of Saint Matthias in May of 2013, and Revernd John M. Jerek was installed as the eighth pastor of Saint Matthias Church on Sunday, June 18, 2017.
