Parish History

On October 14, 1956, Sacred Heart became a mission church of Assumption Parish, Geneva. On June 24, 1960, Bishop Walsh gave Sacred Heart parish status. Sacred Heart prides itself on its parishioner’s volunteerism.

St. John the Baptist Church was established in 1823 and the rectory was built in 1900. In 1982 the original grade school building was razed and, as a momento, the corner stone of the building, dated 1898, was installed into the outside wall of the parish hall. The 1926 high school building was converted into a parish hall. The nuns’ convent was also converted into the “Gallagher Center” which houses the education offices and parish meeting rooms and often used for small group retreats.

From the Mother of Churches in Northeast Ohio, St. John’s grew smaller as a parish during the flight to the suburbs in the 1960s and the 1970s. Today, with a ministry to its downtown neighbors and a pride in its traditions, St. John’s remains a vibrant embodiment of the Catholic faith in Downtown Canton and Ohio.
