Parish History

In September of 1899, by decree of the Most Rev. Ignatius F. Horstmann, Bishop of Cleveland, St. Mary Immaculate Conception Congregation, Canton was established to accommodate members of St John’s and St Peter’s who were living in the Southern section of Canton. Popularly known as St Mary’s, Father Clement Treiber took charge October 8, 1899, and celebrated their first Mass in the basement of the new building Christmas Eve 1899!

We are people of God, celebrating our faith as St. Mary/St. Benedict Parish in Canton, Ohio. With diverse roots and unique talents, we strive to live out our baptismal commitment to love and serve God and neighbor.

As we gather in prayer and worship, to praise our Lord, we share a communion of faith, grace, and service.

We endeavor to live as Christians by reaching out to our brothers and sisters, proclaiming the Word, demonstrating compassion, and by sharing our faith through evangelization in order to make our parish a community of love and service.

St. Mary/St. Benedict Parish History

On May 28, 2010, Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J. Bishop of Youngstown announced the merging of two Canton parishes: St. Mary Immaculate Conception and St. Benedict. These two parishes officially merged on March 25, 2011 with a new name of: St. Mary/St. Benedict Parish. A single parish with two worship sites. The Rev. Benson Claret Okpara, PhD. was appointed as the Administrator. In 2019 Deacon Randolph Smith was appointed by Bishop Murry as the new Parish Leader. Under his leadership, we have continued to knit together our unique gifts and talents, with a sense of warmth and enthusiasm to maintain our dedication to serving the local community.
