In 2019, The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., (now deceased) announced the approved plan for pastoral regions for the Diocese of Youngstown. The late Bishop Murry stated “given the realities of population, Catholic affiliation and participation, and the aging demographic of our priests, each parish was placed into a pastoral region. Based on the feedback from priests, parish leaders, parish pastoral and finance councils the goal of the plan allows us to think and act upon creative solutions that fit local needs.”
The plan includes the relocating of the two Hispanic Masses currently being celebrated at St. Brendan Parish, Youngstown and Christ the Good Shepherd Parish, Campbell to a central location at St. Dominic Parish, Youngstown. The Mass will be celebrated each Sunday at 1: 00pm beginning September 20, 2020.
Father Vincent De Lucia, O.P., pastor of St. Dominic Parish in a letter August 20, 2020 stated, “I believe an opportunity that the Dominican friars of the Providence of St. Joseph are well positioned to embrace is in the area of Hispanic ministry. As a Dominican province, we are blessed with a number of young friars who speak Spanish and have a strong desire to minister to the Hispanic community.” The late Bishop Murry concluded his letter to the people of the Diocese of Youngstown with these words, “I know that change is difficult. We always need to leave some old ways behind in order to improve. Our Goal is to live and move and have our being in a vibrant Church.”
