Reverend Joseph Witmer Receives James Fitzgerald Ecumenical Award

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown announces that Reverend Joseph Witmer received the James Fitzgerald Award bestowed by the Catholic Association of Diocesan and Ecumenical and Interreligious Officers (CADEIO) at the National Workshop for Christian Unity 2019 in St. Louis MO.  The James Fitzgerald Award is given for “outstanding contribution and service in the work of Christian unity (and interreligious cooperation) to either a person or an organization, honoring the national, international, or regional impact of the recipient and his work”.  The Atonement Friars of Greymoor, Johannes Cardinal Willebrands, and Reverend Tom Ryan CSP are among past recipients.

Reverend Witmer has faithfully served the Diocese of Youngstown as Ecumenical Officer.  He has attended 48 consecutive National Workshops on Christian Unity.  He has been a tireless advocate for Christian unity and interreligious cooperation locally and nationally. 

Reverend Witmer was appointed Diocesan Ecumenical Officer in 1971.  With the permission of Bishop Malone, he accepted an appointment as an Associate in the USCCB office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs from 1979 to 1987.
