SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Publications Editor, to provide event coverage and write content for The Catholic Echo magazine and media website. To support diocesan writing projects.
Part-time position, 15 hours per week, with weekend and evening responsibilities.
PRIMARY DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the direction of the Publications Editor, write feature stories, profiles, event listings, captions and more for The Catholic Echo print magazine and website
- Attend and write about events around the six counties of the Diocese, providing basic photographic coverage when necessary
- Meet deadlines for writing assignments
- Conduct interviews and research to support assignments
- Recommend art for assignments and coordinate with the Staff Photographer where necessary
- Lay out stories in WordPress and publish them online and on social media
- Work with the Publications Editor and proofreaders to make changes to assignments throughout the editorial process
- Creates email newsletters for The Catholic Echo brand
- Attend weekly edit meetings
- Recommend story ideas
- Write blogs, emails, website content and other assignments as necessary for the Communications Department and other departments within the Diocese
- Other duties as assigned by the Publications Editor
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Practicing Catholic committed to the mission and values of the Diocese of Youngstown and the Catholic Church
- A bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field
- Two years professional writing experience, in either the journalism, communications or marketing fields
- A portfolio of professional writing samples
- Knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft products and cloud-based project management tools
- Familiarity with WordPress a plus
- Photography skills a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong proficiency in grammar
- Familiarity with AP Style
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to cover stories in all six counties of the Diocese.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to track and manage work hours and track mileage for reimbursement
- Willing to work weekends and evenings to cover events
- Background clearance and Safe Environment training required
PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS: Publications Editor regarding writing assignments and editorial direction; Staff Photographer to coordinate event coverage; Production staff regarding story layout; Proofreaders for direction throughout the editorial process; Communications Director on other diocesan writing projects
