Two Opportunities to Explore Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit

Every Catholic adult in the Diocese of Youngstown (and beyond)  is invited to a participate in two-special events to learn more about the recent Apostolic Exhortation, Christus Vivit, translated as “Christ is Alive!”. The first is a dinner and presentation on Monday, November 4th at Streetsboro St. Joan of Arc Parish, wherein Paul Jarzembowski of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will provide an overview of this important document.  We hope that young adults in particular (those in their late teens, twenties and thirties) will be able to join in this evening as this document, written by Pope Francis follows the October 2018 Synod of Bishops on “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment” and is addressed to “young people and to the entire People of God.”  This evening is also for pastors, parish ministers, deacons, catechists, evangelization teams, youth ministers, parish staffs, Catholic school principals, teachers, mission teams, parish councils,  finance councils, members of religious communities, Catholic organization leaders (e.g. Knights of Columbus, Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Scouting leaders, Women’s Guild, etc.) and everyone interested in energizing your parish! We will begin with prayer at 6:00 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner and the presentation.  Cost is $20.

The second opportunity is a day-long in-service at Streetsboro St. Joan of Arc Parish with Mr. Jarzembowski taking us deeper into Christus Vivit to discuss implications and practical steps to incorporate the Holy Father’s guidance in all areas of ministry in our faith communities. This day of process and planning will be helpful for all in parish and Catholic school leadership.  It will make for a perfect staff-development day.  The in-service will begin with morning refreshments at 9:30 a.m., prayer at 10:00, followed by the presentations and discussions until 3:00 p.m.  Cost is $20 per person.  The program has been approved for four (4) General Religious Education Certification hours.

Paul serves as the Assistant Director for Youth & Young Adult Activities in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Secretariat of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. In this role, he oversees the coordination of World Youth Day USA.  Previously, he served as diocesan director for young adult ministry in Joliet and parish youth/young adult ministries for parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He and his wife Sarah live in the Washington, D.C. area. Paul was involved with the Pre-Synod preparations and served as an Observer at the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment, which led to the Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit. His experience and insight will help draw you into the document and imagine the possibilities of living it out!

Mr. Jarzembowski spoke at the June First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown, and the Diocesan Offices of Catholic Schools, Evangelization and Pastoral Planning, Lay Ministry and Leadership Formation, Permanent Diaconate, Pre-Life, Marriage and Family Life, Religious Education, Vocations, Vowed Religious, and Youth and Young Adult Ministry are happy to welcome him back to our diocese for this larger audience.

An Apostolic Exhortation is document issued by the Holy Father as a pastoral message to establish a clear message for Catholics to critically address an issue in the Catholic Church and modern society.  While it does not define doctrine, it does direct specific activity within the Church.  Christus Vivit is Pope Francis’ fourth Apostolic Exhortation.
