Position Title: Music Director

Salary / Benefits  / Hours: Negotiable (To be determined)

 

Basic Objective: Under the supervision of the Pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, to encourage full, active, conscious participation of the faithful at parish liturgies by providing musical support for parish celebrations, directing Music Ministry, and participating in ongoing liturgy preparation & evaluation.

Requirements:

  • Compliant with Catholic Church’s direction about the role of music in the Liturgy.
  • Ability to judge appropriateness of music for the Liturgy vs. other worship venues.
  • Able to lead music and worship confidently.
  • Collaborative team member/servant.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent keyboard, piano, organ and vocal skills.
  • Experience and expertise with traditional Catholic music and Contemporary Catholic/Christian music.
  • Experience directing Adult and Children’s choirs
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must be flexible with the work schedule, especially on Holy Days and for special events.

Preferred Qualifications Include:

  • Education / Formal training in music with proficiency in keyboard, piano, organ and improvisation skills.
  • Some experience in liturgical music.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred, with demonstrated knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy, role of music within the liturgy, familiarity with liturgical documents, the various rites and music resources, the Roman Missal and Lectionary.
  • Strong organizational skills; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work without supervision; ability to coordinate and collaborate with other ministers and members of the staff.
  • Background in choral direction and vocal instruction. Some experience in Music Education is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of sound equipment.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The parish director of sacred music is responsible, under the pastor, for providing the musical framework for all parish liturgical celebrations and for overseeing and coordinating the musical  efforts of all involved in the ministry of music. Responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

  • Selects music for all pertinent liturgies based on the liturgical season and the readings.
  • Chooses music familiar to the congregation and introduces new music with special focus on retention.
  • Prepares and reproduces worship aids for weekend and other liturgies, and provides music list to sign- language interpreter by Thursday prior to weekend mass or other special liturgical functions as necessary.
    • Recruits, trains and schedules cantors, choir and other musicians as needed.
    • Directs the Parish Choir and plans, purchases and generates music for choir use.
    • Plans music, conducts rehearsals, plays the keyboard/piano/organ and sings for weekend Masses and other special liturgies such as Holy Days, Weddings, Funerals, outdoor Masses, etc.
  • Plan music, conduct rehearsals and play music for CCD, youth participation in Masses and special liturgical activities.
    • Care, maintenance and repair of Parish-owned instruments and the sound system.
    • Manages and maintains the music library, ordering music as necessary.
  • Orders pew resources (Missalette, Music Issue, and additional resources as necessary).
  • Secure appropriate copyright licensing (OneLicense), and follow all protocols and procedures to maintain proper adherence to requirements.
  • Member of the Parish Liturgy Committee, attends meetings.
  • Participates in the budget process for music ministry needs.
  • Continue to develop personal and professional skills by taking courses and/or participating in workshops and conferences that are related to work, the mission of pastoral liturgy, and the future direction of the parish.
