Bishop David J. Bonnar has issued the following memorandum to All Priests, Diocesan Pastoral Associates, School Presidents, School Principals, and Pastoral Associates:
RE: Scouting
This letter is to advise you of action taken by the Diocese with respect to parishes or schools where Boy Scout Troops or other Scouting organizations, including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Brownies, conducted meetings or activites on school premises. After thoroughly reviewing these relationships with Diocesan legal council and Scouting officials in light of insurance coverage and potential liability as well as changes in Scouting itself, the Diocese determined that parishes and school facilities will no longer be made available to Scouting Units for meetings or activities of any kind, including recruitment, and parish and school officials will not serve as charter organizations in their official capacities.
This policy decision applies to all Scouting organizations as stated above, but will not affect the religious activities and awards available to Scouts through the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.
