Coat of Arms

REVERENDÍSIMO DAVID J. BONNAR
Obispo de Youngstown | Bishop of Youngstown

My Dear Spanish Speaking Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On September 15, 2022, we began the yearly observance of Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time for us to reflect on and give thanks to God for the many Hispanic peoples who have come to form part of the family of God that is the Church, and who also form the fabric of our very diverse country.

In my travels throughout the diocese, I have been heartened by the Latino community’s growing presence especially in the parishes in Youngstown, Ashtabula, Canton, and Salem.

This past summer we as a diocese began to celebrate the three yearlong National Eucharistic Revival. This first year, the focus centers on the diocese. I have already joined the faithful for local celebrations in some of the six counties of our diocese, and I look forward to continuing to join you for the celebration of the Mass and a Eucharistic Procession to renew the place of the Blessed Sacrament in our lives. I am happy to report that in August, with guidance from my Spanish-language tutor, Paulina Montaldo, I was able to deliver my first-ever homily in Spanish.  There will be more to come!

On Saturday, October 8, 2022, at John F. Kennedy High School, Warren, our diocese will host a Ministry Day for the benefit of the leaders, volunteers, catechists, and faithful members of our local Church. Please know that there will be presentations in Spanish.

I am also looking forward to the annual Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which will take place on Monday, December 12, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. in Saint Columba Cathedral. This year, I will preside for the first time as your bishop. This diocesan celebration for all will conclude with a reception and cultural presentation at Ursuline High School from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Every parish and community are important. As we strive for greater collaboration among all, I want to thank the Hispanic community for the example of unity and the contributions you give through the sharing of your many rich heritages in one expression of faith.

I also want to encourage you to seek ways to share your beautiful public devotions with the wider Catholic community. I am thinking of the Advent devotions of Posadas, the public reenactment of the Way of the Cross or Via Crucis, and your love for our Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. You are a gift to our diocese! I am also grateful to Father Brian Smith, Diocesan Director of Hispanic Ministry, and your respective pastors for their exemplary leadership.

Please pray with me, “That All May Be One.”

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown

Jesus gets right to the heart of the matter

February is National Heart Month. It is an intentional time to draw attention to the organ of our heart and all the relationships therein.

February offers more than you think

The cold barrenness of February can be so deceiving. While outside it appears that life and growth has halted momentarily, do not be misled.
