New in the Library: Summer Reading

Summer is a time when we think of relaxing and doing things we don’t get to do the rest of the year. It is a time of leisure. Why not take this time to spend with a good book? Or one of our faith learning opportunities?

Real Presence: What Does it Mean and Why Does it Matter? Timothy P. O’Malley. Ave Maria Press, 2021. O’Malley offers a concise introduction to Catholic teaching on real presence and transubstantiation through a biblical, theological, and spiritual account of these doctrines from the early Church to today. He also explores how real presence enables us to see the vulnerability of human life and the dignity of all flesh and blood.

Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi. Richard Rohr. Franciscan Media, 2014.  Francis found an “alternative way” to follow Jesus, one that disregarded power and privilege and held fast to the narrow path of the Gospel. Rohr helps us look beyond the birdbath image of the saint to remind us of the long tradition founded on his revolutionary, radical, and life-changing embrace of the teachings of Jesus.

The Pope’s Cat. Jon M. Sweeney. Paraclete Press, 2018. This is the story of a stray born on the Via della Conciliazione in Rome, how she’s adopted by the Pope, and then “rules” the Vatican from museum to floorboard! First in a new series. No one has a closer view of what’s happening in the world’s tiniest nation, Vatican City, than Margaret, the Pope’s new cat. But she wasn’t always Margaret, and she wasn’t always the Pope’s cat. She started out as a stray on the streets of Rome, and there are those in the Vatican who wish she’d never been allowed inside. This fun, adorable new character will appeal to all kids!  Here is a cat who does what she likes regardless of what others, even someone like the Pope, expects of her—even when the Queen of England comes on a state visit!
