YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Bishop David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown has appointed Sister Mary McCormick as the Interim President of Ursuline High School effective July 1.
Sister Mary is the 21st General Superior of the Ursuline Sisters. She ministers as a Professor of Systematic Theology for St. Mary’s Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Cleveland where she has served since 1997. Sister Mary holds a Doctorate in systematic theology from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y.; a Master of Arts in religious education from Loyola University, New Orleans; a Master of Arts in theology from Duquesne University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Youngstown State University.
Sister Mary was also an instructor at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Louisville and Ursuline High School. She is an Austintown native and a graduate of Ursuline High School.
On her appointment as Interim president, Bishop Bonnar says “I am very grateful to Sister Mary McCormick for accepting this charge to be Interim President of Ursuline High School in this time of transition. As a woman religious and superior of the Ursuline Sisters, Sister is a holy woman devoted to the charism and mission that the High School embodies. Sister Mary is a born leader who has humbly, faithfully and effectively served the Church.”
Superintendent Dr. Steven Jones says “I am excited to welcome Sister Mary back to Ursuline. Her experience in education at all levels will help sustain the excellence that is an earmark of Ursuline High School, and her personal investment in the community will be a significant asset to the school.”
Sister Mary says “I am humbled to be appointed by Bishop Bonnar as interim President of Ursuline High School. In 1905, the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown founded the Ursuline Academy, an all-girls high school at the Rayen Avenue Convent. By 1930, the coed Ursuline High School was located on Bryson St. I am honored to continue the legacy of Ursuline Sisters, priests, and laity who have been integral to the strong heritage of the school, and to work with the current administration, faculty, and staff to further the mission of the school.”
