The Most Reverend David J. Bonnar, Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, is pleased to announce that a spiritual bond has been established between the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Youngstown with the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, the first of all churches in the world dedicated to the Mother of God.

The Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major has made a special bond of spiritual communion with over 300 Marian shrines throughout the world through an official affiliation. This affiliation allows the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Youngstown to share in Saint Mary Major Basilica’s spirituality, devotion to the Mother of God, prayers of intercession, and in particular, the precious grace of Indulgences granted by the Apostolic Penitentiary.

An official declaration from Stanisław Card. Ryłko, Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major announces this spiritual bond:

The Major Papal Basilica of Mary, the very primary temple of her as the Most Holy Mother of God as defined by the Council of Ephesus and dedicated to the People of God, especially the Roman Pontiff, now grants spiritual benefits to the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Youngstown.  In this grant there are special occasions for the plenary indulgences:

    • On the feast of Saint Mary Major, Liberianae Hill, August 5
    • On the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16
    • On all Solemnities of the Ever Virgin Mary
    • One day a year, chosen freely by the Faithful of the Basilica
    • For all pilgrims who visit the Basilica

This rescript is recorded in the registry of the Basilica, together with the document from the Apostolic Penitenzieria, for the good of the Faithful and for the Pilgrims, that they may grow in piety and holiness of life.

Given Rome, May 13, 2024.

Stanisław Card. Ryłko, Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major
