The Most Reverend David J. Bonnar, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown has appointed Mr. Justin Huyck, Coordinator of Media Relations for the Diocese of Youngstown, effective September 1, 2021.  The Coordinator of Media Relations is responsible for the implementation of communication policies and programs that support the Church.

Mr. Huyck was born in Lexington, Kentucky and raised in upstate New York. He is a graduate of Cornell University, where he studied Government, with an M.A. in Theology and Liturgy from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.  Before arriving in Northeast Ohio, he served communities in Albany, NY, Chicago, IL, and Kingston, Ontario.

Since 2013, Huyck has served as Pastoral Associate and Director of Adult Faith Formation at St. Michael the Archangel in Canton. At St. Michael’s and in his previous communities, he has supported various aspects of parish life, including liturgy, adult faith formation, retreats, small faith groups, and youth and young adult ministries, as well as pastoral planning and development of parish leadership bodies. In Stark County and beyond, he has been an active collaborator and innovator for multi-parish, diocesan, ecumenical, and interfaith projects. He currently serves on the Diocese of Youngstown’s Council for Catechesis and Lutheran-Catholic Covenant Commission for the diocese and the Northeast Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Mr. Huyck is known as a skilled communicator in his parish and beyond. He is a regular speaker, facilitator, and retreat leader with adults and teens, and the author of two books of biblical spirituality: From Home to Home: Finding Meaning in Mobility and Baptism: Alive in Christ. He also served as Chair of the Product Development Committee, and later on the Board of Directors, for the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, now known as In Word and Witness – a national Catholic Community dedicated to evangelization and catechesis. He currently serves on the Board of the North American Forum for Small Christian Communities.

Mr. Huyck is married to Dr. Julia Jones Huyck, Associate Professor of Hearing Sciences at Kent State University and program coordinator of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. They have been married for nineteen years, and have two children in middle school.

Bishop Bonnar welcomes Justin Huyck to his newly created office.  “Justin’s skill set in written, verbal and interpersonal communication provides the Diocese of Youngstown with the opportunity to proactively promote the work of the Church through a variety of communication avenues.”

“In his pastoral letter, Testify to the Light, Bishop Bonnar suggests an exciting future for our diocesan Church that is rooted in prayer and faith sharing in community, facilitates healing in our broken world, overflows in service, and communicates with joyful witness,” Mr. Huyck remarks. “I am grateful that Bishop Bonnar has invited me to support this vision by calling me into this new role. By strengthening our means of communication, the Church can give voice to the diverse ways that our parishes and people experience the light of Christ and are called to participate in the Church’s mission of testifying to the light.”
