Our History

Holy Family Parish in Poland was founded in 1956, when the Catholic population of 325 families in Poland–which was previously being served by the parishes in Struthers, Boardman and New Middletown—had grown so much that Bishop Walsh established the parish with the Holy Family as its patron. The community purchased a six-acre plot for the new church, and the first Mass of Holy Family Parish was celebrated on October 21, 1956, in the Poland Union School auditorium.

Groundbreaking for a church/school complex was on April 29,1957, with the first Mass in the new structure being celebrated on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, that year. The eight- classroom school opened in 1958, but enrollment grew so quickly that a group of parish men dedicated their time to add a floor to the structure shortly thereafter. The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown staffed the school from its inception to 2005, when laypeople took over as the teachers. In 1981, Holy Family School piloted an all-day kindergarten class, the first in Greater Youngstown. The school continues to offer pre-K to eighth-grade education to students in Youngstown today.

A new church was built in 1997, and a 6,000-square-foot parish center was opened in 2009, accommodating gatherings of up to 400 people. Today, the parish has an active St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Knights of Columbus, it is home to the Dorothy Day House & Garden, Beatitude House, a Food Pantry and more. Regular parish events include the parish picnic, new parishioner welcome breakfasts, Knights of Columbus pancake breakfasts, bi-weekly Adoration, Lenten lunches and novenas to St. Anthony. Holy Family collaborates with St. Paul the Apostle Parish in New Middletown, Ohio. The parish’s dedication to the Holy Family reflects a charism of welcome to all, as well as a desire to teach and care for others.
