Parish History

In September of 1922, the Newton Falls Mission was appointed its first resident pastor, the Rev. Francis B. Tomanek. Through his effort a chapel was set up in a rented building on Broad Street on January 17, 1923, and four days later, the first Mass to be said at this location was offered by him.

The Mission grew in size and in February 1923 it was officially designated as St. Joseph Parish. Property was selected and purchased and plans were formulated for the erection of a permanent church.

The church was completed and dedicated by Bishop Schrembs on Sunday, April 27, 1924.

In 1966, Father Slipski, organized the purchase of a large parcel of land and a new rectory, a convent, and a school were constructed. This became the new St. Mary Parish.

On May 13, 2008, Bishop George Murry, S.J. approved the merger of St. Mary and St. Joseph Parishes. The new parish, St. Mary and St. Joseph has a total of 972 registered parishioners.
