ROME — This morning in Rome, Pope Leo XIV, the first Pope born in the United States, authorized the promulgation of the decree regarding a miracle attributed to the intercession of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. This important step clears the way for his beatification.
Today is a day of deep joy for the Church in the United States and for all who love the missions!
Archbishop Sheen served as the National Director of The Pontifical Mission Societies USA (TPMS) from 1950 to 1966, shaping the missionary identity of generations of U.S. Catholics. He traveled the country — both physically and through prophetic use of writing, radio and television — awakening hearts to the needs of mission territories across Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Latin America.
His passion for evangelization was so strong that he left a significant portion of his patrimony — his writings, radio recordings and many other effects — to support the missions he championed.
