Two to be Ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Youngstown

Ordination will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Saint Columba Cathedral

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – On Saturday, June 1, 2024, the Most Rev. David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown, will ordain Rev. Mr. Kevin Bertleff and Rev. Mr. William N. Wainio to the priesthood of Jesus Christ.  Both men are currently serving as transitional deacons for the Diocese of Youngstown.  The ordination liturgy will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Columba in Youngstown at 10:30 a.m., and can also be viewed online at The Catholic Echo website at www.catholicecho.org/live/

Upon ordination as priests, Deacon Bertleff and Deacon Wainio will be assigned to parishes in the Diocese of Youngstown. Their assignments will be announced during the ordination Mass.

Deacon Kevin Bertleff, a son of John and Kathleen Bertleff, grew up as a parishioner of Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish in Cortland. He attended Lakeview schools and is a graduate of Mount Union College with a degree in Sports Management. In preparation for ministry, he attended Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe, Ohio and graduated recently with a Master of Arts in Theology and a Master of Divinity degree.

Deacon Bertleff served his pastoral internship year at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Aurora and as a transitional deacon, while completing his seminary formation, Deacon Bertleff has been assigned to Saint Joseph Parish in Mogadore and Saint Peter of the Fields Parish in Rootstown.

Deacon William N. Wainio is the son of Anthony and Cynthia Wainio and a parishioner of Saint Angela Merici Parish in Youngstown. He attended Saint Luke Elementary School in Boardman and is a graduate of Ursuline High School. He attended Youngstown State University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from John Carroll University in 2019. He worked as a 911 dispatcher before entering seminary recently earning a Master of Arts in Theology and Master of Divinity degree from Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe, Ohio. Deacon Wainio served his pastoral internship year at Blessed Sacrament Parish and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Warren and as a transitional deacon, while completing his seminary formation, at Saint Jude Parish in Columbiana and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in East Palestine and at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Peter Parish in Canton.
